This review is of the 2008 revised edition. This book is everything you've heard, and is the single most useful and readable auto engineering book I've bought. It strikes a sweet spot between technical theory and practical experience when it comes to different chassis construction methods, materials, and techniques. You'll come to understand the perennial popularity of steel tube frames, why 4130 chrome-moly needs to be TIG or gas welded, the elasticity and fatigue implications of aluminum, and the advantages but practical difficulties of monocoque design. This book would be invaluable to the Formula SAE competitor, or indeed to any SAE student, and to anyone who wants to know about a variety of chassis types or a little more theory than simply knowing the best practices of one competitive niche. Illustrations and photographs are ample and of good but not outstanding quality. Equations and charts are present when appropriate but do not overshadow the plain text explanations for the numbers. A three and a half page bibliography is included, but the body text does not cite specific bibliographical entries. The last chapter briefly discusses concrete application of the principles discussed in previous chapters. Several specific chassis purposes are covered: American Sprint Cars, Dragsters, "Stock" Cars, Formula One and Indycars, and Lightweight Road Race Cars. Although each of these specialized subtopics undoubtedly deserves a book of its own, I found this section to be too brief and was left wanting much more. Additionally, techniques and best practices applicable to one type of builder aren't terribly useful to constructors of other types of chassis.
The chassis is the most important thing in a race car. Without it there would be no base for the engine, no mounting for the suspensions, etc. If you are interested in actual race car design this is a great book to read and familiarize yourself with modern designs of race cars. I like that they concentrate different chapters on different types of racing. I wish they had included rally design as that is an entirely different monster and has been around since this book was published.
I used this book as a reference when designing a student FSAE car in college. It is not as good Chassis Engineering by Herb Adams, but I personally believe both books are required for a complete library. and both books are under $20, a mere penance for what you will learn about race car structures!
cool
Very general and non-specific.I was hoping for more clear guidelines as far as materials, target safety factors, loading, etc.
good book
Probably my mistake buying this book.I was looking for a book that would give me spicifics on short track asphalt race car chassis. This book gives a bunch of high teck stuff that only a structural engineer would be interested on some high dollar F1 team. The down to earth basic stuff I was looking for like exact demensions and mountig points for control arms and spring perches-was not in this book. At least not in a way that I could understand.I buy a lot of books on race cars because I am an information junkie when it comes to building American short track race cars. What I have been finding in most of the books I buy is mostly information that was common back in the 1970`s.Example; I still have a soft cover book by Steve Smith that I purchased in about 1978. Most of the info I get from current books appear to be a re hash of the information in Steves Book. I have yet to find one chassis book that shows blue prints on how to build chassis for a spicific function. Example of spicific function would be a design for building a chassis that is known to work very well in a fifth mile asphalt race track. Or one that will work well on a half mile race track. What these authors are selling are mostly basic design and theroy. Not one sticks his neck out and says to take two pieces of 2x 3 in. tubing 6 ft long and join the ends with two pieces of 2x3 tubing 2.5 ft long, then add 3 cross beaces so many ft apart. In other words I have yet to find a chassi book that gives blue prints on chassis. My loss is their gain
The revised edition of the ISBN listed below. This book is alot cheaper to purchase then the original book but does have some updates which I enjoyed. Excellent purchase.ISBN-10: 0760302839
